Despite being the furthest we'd travelled so far this season, it was good to field a team (somewhat reduced in size) and honour the return fixture with Southport, who'd given us a great game previously and fielded a very strong squad.
Accommodating our low numbers (9 as opposed to our usual 16 regulars), Southport divided their squad into three teams to create a round robin between the four teams in total. 15min matches with a quick break in between, with no substitutes, meant it would be a good run out and test of fitness for the Eccles lads. This would also be an opportunity for some of our players often on the periphery of the action, to get stuck in (they had no other choice!)
The lads are at an age where they are being encouraged to take more responsibility and communicate with each other. Josh (reluctantly) accepted the Captaincy and tactics and team talks began. Missing our usual Juggernauts in the centre, some problem solving was encouraged and the game plan was to use the wings as much as possible.
The first game got underway and despite losing 7-2, there was some great reflection and insight during the break. Players became more vocal and constructive and put forward solutions for the next game.
Game two ended 5-3 to Southport - we were beginning to find our groove and tries from Josh and Andrej lifted team morale.
Game three ended 4-2 to Southport and again, improved tackling and passing was clear to see.
After game three, the lads were asked if they wanted one more match. Initial response was 'No' but it was pleasing to see them then think about it, remember how far they'd travelled and with a few words of encouragement and a reminder they were representing Eccles, they soon changed their minds, took a deep breath, and stepped out for game four.
Having reiterated the initial plan of passing quickly to the wings, what followed was possibly the best period of play that day, if not for the last few months. Fast, flowing passing, ball to hands, communicating to each other, effective tackling AROUND THE WAIST AND LEGS and NOT the chest (!!) saw Southport's attack contained more effectively. Some dogged defending in front of Eccles try line saw us roll the Southport player onto his back and possession was turned over. More runs from Josh resulted in a try but even more satisfying was Josh's run then off load to debutant, Luca, who sprinted to Southport's try line and put the ball down for a thoroughly deserved try.
Despite the four losses, there was much learnt from the experience. Players recognised how they haven't been putting the skills and tactics practised at training, to use in a match situation. Proper, effective tackling was demonstrated, ironically, by new player Luca, who really made a difference. Archie is learning to make his tackles lower. Cian and Luke's confidence continues to grow, with Cian putting in some fierce tackles and rucking over. Big Ethan needs to repeat his performance from Aspull and 'keep it simple' with his running and passing. Josh must run with the ball tucked into his chest after spilling it and costing the team a try. Andrej needs to get more sleep the night before and turn up awake and alert and LISTEN and finally Owen to keep his leading arm and tackles lower. Special mention should be made of Owen who despite being on the receiving end of some unsportsmanlike tactics, kept his discipline and left the pitch to take control of his emotions. Whilst the matter was dealt with swiftly by the opposition coach, it was admirable how Owen dealt with it, showing great maturity and restraint.
Southport's referee was very complimentary not only about our resolve and determination but also our team discipline, with no arguing or back chat, representing the team and our club well.
Final comments for Luca. An amazing debut where he really made a difference and contributed 110%. The coaches don't give out token 'MOTM' just for debutants, this was a thoroughly deserved award based on Luca's fearless and effective tackling and his enthusiasm, even after being swung around by the 'Family Jewels' during a tackle (it looked as painful as it sounds). Great running speed and strength, Luca gave an inspirational performance to his new teammates - keep it up Luca!
Next Sunday 13th March we are at HOME vs Liverpool Collegiate in the Lancs waterfall Cup. Whilst we're now missing our rugby league contingency, with our additional new players, we should be able to field a team of 13.
As ever, if your child wishes to try rugby, please contact the club via the various club social media accounts and if your child already plays, why not ask them to bring a friend of theirs to try it out?
