Eccles U14’s
A return to form for the mighty 14’s at home today against a well drilled Southport team. The mood was evident in the pre match warm up, last week's loss wasn’t going to happen again. Lots of positivity and confidence ran through the team which showed from the kick off.
The Southport team came with 21 players to Eccles 17 (two of which are new to rugby), and so the lads knew they had to work hard.
Big Ben showed Eccles the way with some superb running, crossing the line for the first Eccles try. Heads now up, Eccles continued to exert pressure with excellent work from the forwards. After a few powerful runs from Max the 8, the ball came to the flying centre Dom. Within metres, he was at full speed and accelerated away to score, leaving at least 8 defenders on the floor.
Our two new players then took their turn to shine. An excellent pass from Kian saw Alfie, showing some lightning speed, sprinted 60 meters to score.
The hard work from the forwards continued, with Ed being first to the ruck almost every time, building a platform for more tries from Ben, Dom and Alfie. Oliver added 3 conversions, staying calm and showing some real skill.
Special mention goes to Owen who was consistent throughout the game. Scrum half is often taken for granted. A key position and the centre of distribution for each play. A great performance today.
Southport showed resolve and fought back in the second half. Some excellent rugby and clever play brought them, respectably, back into the game.
Final score 46-24. A impressive performance from the mighty 14’s. We go again next week.
