At this time of year, it is the annual tradition at Eccles RFC to ask our members, supporters and sponsors to nominate a member of the club that they believe deserves recognition for their outstanding effort and dedicated commitment in service of the club, during the past season.
Nominations for volunteers can come from any section - Minis and Juniors, Ladies, Mens, Grounds, Clubhouse, Committee, Club Officers - and their efforts on behalf of our club, could be physical, practical, official, financial, managerial, promotional or any other basis you wish to recognise.
There are two awards made in memory of former members who mean a great deal to our club.
The Harry Broomhead Trophy is awarded in honour of Eccles RFC's former club Captain, Chairman and President who served the club for almost 60 years. Harry joined Eccles in 1948 as a player when the club first moved to Gorton Street and went on to become a stalwart member of the committe and a major force in the development of our club and facilities in the 1980s and 1990s.
Traditionally, the Harry Broomhead Trophy is awarded in recognition of an outstanding contribution in a operational or social capacity and presented at the Saturday night Dinner Dance.
The Christopher Tickle Shield is awarded in honour of our former player, who suffered a neck injury whilst playing for Eccles RFC at 23 years old in September 2009 and later died in hospital. Christopher was posthumously awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award by HRH Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 2010 and as a tribute Eccles RFC became the first rugby club in the country to establish its own DofE awards programme in 2011.
Traditionally, the Christopher Tickle Shield is awarded in recognition of an outstanding contribution in a rugby capacity and presented at the Friday Senior Player's Awards Night.
Nominations for both awards can be made to Eccles RFC Hon. Secretary Dave Nicholls, either by text 07867 724264, or by email to davenicholls_abc@hotmail.com, or via voting slips on the bar. Voting is now open and will close at midnight, Sunday 1st May 2022.
