Dear Members, it's the club's annual tradition, at the end of each season, to recognise outstanding dedication and effort by its volunteers through the awarding of the Harry Broomhead ‘Club Person of The Year’ Trophy.
Harry Broomhead joined Eccles RFC in 1948 (the first season at the new Gorton Street ground) and was to prove over the many following years to be one of the most loyal, hardworking and irreplaceable members ever to be associated with the club in its long history. Harry served as the First XV Captain from 1952 to 1957, 9 years as Club Chairman between 1965 and 1979, and 15 years as Club President between 1979 and 1998. He was a larger than life character, well known for his enthusiasm and humour and, alongside his playing and administrative roles, the incredible amount of physical work he contributed at the club including being a driving force behind the construction of the new clubhouse in 1984. Harry passed away in 2010, his ashes were spread on the pitch and his memory lives on in the Trophy we award each season.
Recent recipients of the award include Leeann Aspinall, James Wright, Kevin Walker, Heather Thorpe, Alan Bent, Carolyn Radcliffe and Mark Dutton.
This season, alongside the Harry Broomhead Cup, the club will also be awarding a new, second memorial volunteer award.
Both awards represent a membership expression of recognition and appreciation for above and beyond service to the club, and as such, will be presented at the end of season Senior Players Awards night on Friday 12 May.
Members can nominate deserving individuals, Groups, or Sections of the Club by sending a Text or WhatsApp message to Dave Nicholls 07867 724264 or an email to davenicholls_abc@hotmail.com before 12 noon Thursday 11th May.
