On Saturday 3rd February Tyldesley’s home game against Trafford MV will be sponsored in memory of Eddie Griffiths, former Eccles Captain. Elaine Griffiths has extended an invitation to members of Eccles to attend (although it is appreciated that attentions may well be directed at the Eccles fixture at Widnes on the same day).
Eddie became a member of Eccles RFC in April 1963 and was instrumental in recruiting lads from De La Salle, Wardley Grammar and other local schools for the Colts team which was then forming at the club. Eddie was appointed Eccles 1st XV Captain in the 1968/69 and 1976/77 seasons, playing his part in the successful team which won the Griffon Plaque; Eddie went on to serve the club on both the general committee and also on the Grounds committee.
Eddie's work took him to Hong Kong where he played for Valley Rugby Club. Eddie left Eccles RFC in the late 1970's to play for Tyldesley RUFC, where he lived with his wife Elaine. Eddie sadly passed away last October in the Isle of Man and we will be raising a glass in his memory at the Reunion Lunch at Eccles on Saturday 17 February.
