Our mini and junior teams enjoyed a second week of competitive rugby on Sunday 9th May with fixtures against Trafford MV, Burnley and Winnington Park.

U7s v TMV (Home)

The sun was shining again on Gorton Street as the 7s took on a 25 strong TMV.  Welcoming back some old faces, the Eccles outfit were quick off the mark after a sharp warm up from coach Benty. Lessons have been learned from last week as there was little diving to score and running backwards to find space! Running four concurrent games today ensured all of the lads had extended game time and you can see them progressing from play to play! Lockdown sessions have kept this group close and we’re very proud of the friendships and growing camaraderie.

Special mention to Amber from TMV who was the hottest stepper of the day alongside Ellis from Eccles who has the quickest wheels in town. Parks enjoyed his 2nd week as a mini and we welcomed new recruit Rafa to the fold.

Stockport have reached out so we’ll welcome them to the fortress that is our Peel Green school field and go again!

U8s v TMV (Home)

It was more of the same for the under 8s with another brilliant performance this week. Following on from their first game against Bolton, every one of the Eccles team was fantastic this time out against a TMV squad boasting well over 30 kids. The passing, running, tackling and organisation were all brilliant - and coming on leaps and bounds every week. For the coaches it's great to see all the hard work on the training pitch during lockdown paying off. It's like they've never been away. Roll on next week.

U9s v TMV (Home)

Another excellent performance from Eccles U9s. Last week we had 7 players - this week we had 12 including two new players who attended the Inner Warrior event last week! Welcome Freya and Aila!

TMV arrived at Groton Street with over 20 players so we played 3 games - 1 team of 7 with no subs for TMV and our team with rolling subs. A strip clash forced Eccles to wear their shirts inside out but this didn’t hinder our players performance and we started where we left off last week in our game v Bolton . Lots of tackling, jinxing runs and tries against strong TMVs teams saw lots of end to end action - Eccles have really got to grips with the contact game especially as so many of the team are only playing their 1st or 2nd game this week!
One of the most pleasing aspects of todays match was Eccles displaying the core rugby values of TREDS:  Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship.
Thank you to TMV coaching staff for refereeing. Looking forward to the game against Tyldesley next Sunday. We'd love to have some photos to capture our U9s in action if any parents would be willing to step forward?

U11s v Burnley (Home)

A strong performance today against a big, physical Burnley side. The first 15 minutes was an eye-opener for the lads and a contrast to the previous game, Burnley proving to be a more aggressive side than Bolton last week. Tempers were running high from both sides and the ref's whistle had a good airing that's for sure

After a quick drink and a team talk to calm tensions the team turned their game heads on and played a full end to end game of proper rugby with plenty of action in the middle.
The size of the big lads didn't bother our boys with big tackles coming in from Seb, Fin and the silent assassin Kenzie.  Harrison showed he has wicked pace with a few good runs gaining good ground. Billy proved again your best off out of his way, with a couple of strong runs through the middle of Burnley, and made a habit of clearing the ruck with ease.
The commitment and support throughout gave us the edge and the win in this very close game.

Massive shout out to Jamie, winning player's player and coaches player of the week in only his second ever game of rugby after scoring three impressive tries and keeping the coaches eyes peeled. Well done boys!

U12s v Burnley (Home)

Second match post-covid and the U12's were up against a strong Burnley squad of 18 players vs our 10. However the Burnley Coach was understanding and accommodating, and we agreed 10 v 10, with Burnley having the advantage of substitutes so it was going to be a tough 60mins of rugby for Eccles but great experience and lots of game time. This was the alternative option to the previous week where the teams were mixed so again, good for comparison.
Burnley got off to a strong start with some stand out players bulldozing through the Eccles defence. Once we'd got over the initial onslaught, Eccles began to find their feet and Harrison retaliated with some juggernaut-like runs of his own, careering through the Burnley line to keep us in the game. Burnley soon adapted to this and displayed some excellent technique in tackling Harrison, forcing Eccles to use the width and make more of players like Andre and Josh - this began to pay off and Eccles also started to see the tries coming in. Josh eventually scored 4 in total with Andre 3 - both displaying speed and strength, great to see, even more rewarding is Andre grinning as he runs through the defence?!
Some gutsy performances were seen from new player Ethan, who always seems to be in the thick of it and enjoying himself! Denny, Ollie, Jamie and Charlie did some fantastic work at rucking over and getting stuck in at the breakdown with Captain Ellis distributing the ball out wide. Feedback from the Coaches was the boys were applying what they'd been doing in training so well done for listening.
George demonstrated his trademark snaking runs and his off-loads to Andre and Josh produced further tries for Eccles - however this was only just keeping us in the game with Burnley powering through with a brace of tries meaning they lead for most of the game. An injury in the first half of the game left Harrison out of action later but the rest of the team really stepped up. Eccles spirits looked dampened at times, but Ellis did his job and kept them going, supported by Josh and George who directed their teammates in defence and attack.
Whilst Burnley were clearly the victors, it was a determined, gutsy performance by Eccles against a bigger squad with substitutes, which began to take its toll on Eccles towards the end. However, the boys are clearly taking on board what they're being taught at training and this is really satisfying for the coaches, regardless of the match result. 'Proud' was the word of the day! Well done Eccles.
As ever, the U12's are on the lookout for new players so please promote the team to family, friends and class mates and get in touch with any of the coaches or manager if you know of anyone interested.

U13s v Burnley (Home)

The sun was shining at Gorton Street this morning, paired with the fantastic condition of the pitch, gave the perfect combination for rugby.  Eccles were quick out of the blocks with 3 try’s in 5 minutes. However, overconfidence may have played a part and focus dropped as Burnley responded quickly to even the score.

A well matched opposition made the Eccles lads work hard at the breakdown and in the tackle. Dom led the way with some superb tackles which were equaled by Oliver and Alfie who both got stuck in.  Captain Michael dazzled spectators with some fancy footwork to beat 3 men and score. Not to be outdone, Ben showed that big lads can shift with some awesome running and at one point, ran the full length of the pitch to score, fending numerous opposition players in the process.

As Burnley fought back, Flynn ‘the power house’ carried the ball (and 3 opposition players) over the gain line which set up Ed, to pick up at the back of the ruck to run another try in for Eccles. More power was added to the team with the introduction of Tom, who, eager as ever, wanted every ball and continuously dragged 4 or 5 defenders with him to create space for the Eccles speedsters.

The work rate of Fin and Max could not be questioned all game, we saw this pay off as the ever present Owen released the ball to Theo who backed his own pace and raced past the opposition to score.

The final score doesn’t matter (we think it was a draw). What’s great to see is the lads backing each other up and coming together as a unit. These boys will go far, some great raw talent on display. To be a successful team, you need to back your mates and stand together. We are now seeing this happen with our lads.

P.S. fitness training on Wednesday lads. Welcome to the full-sized pitch!

U14s v TMV (Away)

Awaiting report

U15s v Winnington Park (AWAY)

A depleted Eccles travelled across the border into Cheshire again for their 2nd game in May. With 10 players unavailable and those remaining playing out of position, it was likely to be a tough test. This was confirmed after WP scored within the first 5 mins!
Things soon got worse for Eccles on 10 minutes as their talisman Captain Lucas, departed the field with an eye injury that required hospital treatment. Moments later WP took further advantage of the weak point through the middle to increase their lead.
Good fortune evaded Eccles as things became increasingly worse when Heath - who had not long since returned from a serious injury and only just stepped into the Skipper's role to lead the lads in the absence of Lucas - also had to leave the field after a dubious ruck resulted in a twisted knee. Forward Blake departed the game following a collision, returned to battle on and departed a second time with a suspected concussion. Chayse also had to leave the field with a shoulder injury but returned for the 4th Quarter.  By now the Eccles boys were shell shocked but with Matt Gardiner acting as Captain, he led the charge time and again.
Ollie, out of place at full back, did all he could to launch attacks from deep and with two hookers, Taz and Harry P at acting scrum half, together with props in the centres the boys did all they could to rescue their pride. Winnington had a full squad to select from and sportingly loaned three players to Eccles in an attempt to keep the game as competitive as possible.
The match concluded 5m out from the Park goal line, with a determined Eccles digging deep into their reserves, driving for the line to come away with soem points to show for their efforts, but coming up short. The final score was 51-0. A heavy loss but by no means did the boys disgrace themselves. Good courage and grit displayed. We go again next week.

U16s v TMV (Away)

The last meeting with Trafford was on 10th March 2019 when, after a closely fought game, resulted in a 24-15 for Eccles.

Even though this was an organised friendly match, right from the onset, Trafford showed they were taking no prisoners by scoring two tries, to take them 10-0 in the first five minutes. What proved to be the start of a highly spirited game led to two more corner tries, with a conversion, to take the score to 22-0, especially with highly effective use of the right wing, leading to a hat trick of tries for the Trafford winger. Strong efforts from Eccles, as they began to rally, kept Trafford from adding to the scoreboard before the break.

A powerful start straight from the second half whistle by Eccles led to a try from Vinnie Godfrey and conversion from Alex Strother, giving Eccles seven well-deserved points. However, a renewed surge from Trafford led to them by being rewarded another seven points collected. Capitalising on an Eccles error, they inflicted swift punishment for another seven points to Trafford, taking the score to 36-7. Soon after, an enthused home team added another seven points, despite a strong effort from Eccles.

A stunning try was scored by Tom Williams, after a phenomenal 45 yard run, shrugging off several players and the Trafford defence, just before the end of the second third of the game. At this point, of the game however, the home team were not pulled up for a number of offsides, high tackles, and lack of releases, by the referee. An unfortunate mid-catch led to a Trafford try and conversion straight from the whistle. Despite a resurgence in the Eccles attack during the final third, Trafford proved too strong, finishing the match victors, with the score finishing at 67-19.
