Eccles 11-11 Fleetwood

Eccles entertained Fleetwood on Saturday hoping to build on the home win against Oldham, the game turned out even closer than that 3 point win. While the pitch was firm underfoot the conditions were poor and the continuous rain meant it was never likely to be a high scoring game. With this in mind Eccles could not have got off to a much worse start than they did.

The ball was turned over and some neat hands from the visitors put Douglas over to give Fleetwood a 5 point lead before most of the crowd had made it to their unfamiliar viewing positions next to the M60. However Eccles rolled their sleeves up and proceeded to get stuck into the game. Eccles began to build territorial pressure and Fleetwood began to concede penalties. The home side regularly showed some ambition to keep the ball moving and despite the conditions were stretching Fleetwood's defence. Speakman chipped over a penalty to reduce the deficit to 2 points. With the half nearing an end Eccles stretched the defence to the left and then identified the space to the right with Speakman putting in an excellent crossfield kick that was gathered by Parkinson who just about had the pace to squeeze in the corner. Given the balance of the first half Eccles might have wanted to have been further ahead at half time but were confident that they could continue in the same vain in the second half and build on the lead they had taken.
However Fleetwood had other ideas and slowly began to exert the same territorial pressure the Eccles had in the opening half. This combined with Fleetwood beginning to edge proceedings at the numerous scrums meant the slender lead was under threat. Penalties were traded and then Eccles, having their best passage of play, had a couple of kickable penalties to increase the lead, which were turned down. Unfortunately Eccles could not convert these chances to the try that would surely have sealed the game.
Eccles were left to rue these decisions as they conceded the equalising penalty with the minutes and light running out. Fleetwood mounted a final attack to try and steal the game but the aggressive Eccles defence they had shown all game held strong to hold on for a draw.

Bury 24-18 Eccles

The Eccles 3s visited Bury on Saturday in rainy and muddy conditions, but that's summer time for us rugby players!  With a couple of men short, the helping hand from our hosts who generously loaned us players for an even contest was appreciated and the game got underway, playing four 20 minute quarters.

Bury started off very determined and came at the Eccles defence hard and fast. Eccles held its nerve and turned over possession. Chris Lewindon ran the ball upfield and was tackled on 30 meter line, resulting in a penalty to Eccles, which was slotted home by Darren Thomasson. 0-3.  Following the penalty, Bury began to work the ball and continued to run at the Eccles defence, scoring a couple of tries and the first 20 was dominated by Bury. 10-3
Eccles came alive in the second 20, building pressure and forward momentumn, Dan Bryson smashing through Bury defence like the Hulk! Eccles Hooker John Hibbert grabbed the ball and forced his way over the line for a great try. 10-8. Eccles confidence started to grow, tackling better and harder. Matthew Twigg and John Traynor and the General Peter Lillie holding the line through to the half time break.
The 3rd quarter was amazing rugby by both sides, with non-stop passing, moving, tackling. On the 50th minute John Traynor ran directly at the Bury defensive line and with coolest of passes, found Nic Hageman, who brilliantly sped through the gaps. His pace was too much and he went over to score a cracking try. 10- 13. The weather deteriorated badly and the rain well and truly kicked in. The Eccles lads re-grouped and repeated what had worked for them previously.  John Hibbert going forward hard. Gary Hamer floating the ball to John Traynor who pushed his way through again. It was constant pressure and, considering the weather, brilliant rugby by all. On 65mins Nic Hageman went over again for his second Try.  10-18. Bury responded with a decent Try of their own. 17-18!
In the final 20 minutes Bury scored a try with some good running to retake the lead 24-18. What I witnessed after that from both sides was guts and determination, a non-stop barrage of tackles and great passing as both sides searched for decisive points. When the final whistle blew, I believed I'd seen a classic, a game I will never forget.
Some special mentions: John Traynor is the man who got me to pick up a rugby ball 30 years ago. It was 25 yrs since John last picked up a ball and following years of pestering he played and was brilliant. Ian Stevenson has not played for 2 years and was nervous about playing, but he played amazing. And my man of the match John Hibbert who was simply sensational - Passing, handling, movement, tackling, running forward and try scoring - Bury could not handle him!
I would also like to thank Bury Rugby club. You were absolute legends.

U16s

Eccles 22-21 Vale of Lune

In a rearranged fixture Eccles welcomed the unbeaten Vale of Lune U16s to Gorton Street on Sunday morning in what proved to be a classic game played in great spirits.

Vale of Lune started the game and Eccles fielded the ball well and set a couple of drives from Blake and Matt but then conceded a penalty for not releasing. Vale of Lune took advantage by tapping quickly although the Eccles side defended well and forced the visitors in touch. Eccles won the line out and Jack cleared the line well with Lucas chasing well but conceded a penalty for a deliberate knock on to give the away side possession again. The Eccles defence was being tested although Joe won a penalty from the scrum after a strong tackle on his opposite number. The pressure was telling on Eccles and Vale of Lune opened the scoring when a deep kick wasn’t dealt with and although Eccles recovered to kick the ball back to the half way line a good passing move through a broken field meant Vale of Lune scored down the right and converted to take an early 0-7 lead.

Eccles restarted the game with the sides trading kicks for territory and Eccles made some good progress with drives from Jack and Matt G and only a dropped ball preventing a potential try. Eccles were again on the back foot and proving to be their own worst enemy by again failing to gather a kick through withn Finn being tackled into touch and from the resulting line out the Vale of Lune 10 dummied his way over the line and under the posts to make the score 0-14.

Joe got the game going again and kicked deep to the number 11 who managed to run cross field from left to right evading some poor attempts at tackles to stroll in for the visitor's third try and move the score 0-21. With just 15 minutes played a heavy defeat looked on the cards at this point.

Eccles forced the knock on from the restart but again conceded a penalty for not releasing but some strong defence from Matt G and Max kept the attack at bay and it was Eccles turn to receive a penalty for not releasing which was compounded by another 10 metres for dissent, Eccles won the resulting lineout and received another penalty which Jack took quickly catching the Vale of Lune defence still offside giving Eccles some momentum, which carried on when Cael took a strong drive and set the ball back for Leighton who saw a gap in the cover defence to kick through and win the race to touchdown and bring Eccles back into the game at 7-21.

Eccles were growing into the game and only their own poor handling stopped more points going on the scoreboard before the half time whistle blew. HT 7-21.

Eccles needed turn the game round and assert themselves in order to capitalise on the way they ended the first half and it was Eccles who kicked off the second half. Good defence from Matt H and a Matt G intercept kept the pressure on the visitors, forcing them to concede a penalty for offside but Eccles managed to lose the lineout allowing Vale of Lune to kick deep, although Abraham made good yards with his running through the midfield.

Eccles were now keeping play in the opponent's half, with Joe testing the visitors with some elusive footwork whilst Harry P took every opportunity to take the game to Vale. Eccles were in the ascendency and blocked an attempted clearance kick. Although Vale of Lune won the scrum a dropped ball gave Joe the chance to kick through and pounce on the loose ball and when Jack arrived in support he picked the ball up to make good yards and fed Lucas who won the penalty on the 20 metre line . Jack and Joe went close to scoring from the line out and when the visitors conceded yet another penalty Jack seized the opportunity to take a quick tap and crash over under the posts giving himself an easy kick to close the gap to 7 points at 14-21.

The kick off was fumbled backwards by Eccles, although Leighton recovered the ball well and won a penalty. The kick to touch didn’t make it but Vale of Lune knocked the ball forward giving Eccles more good field position allowing Chayse and Harry G to make more good yards with punishing drives. Eccles were really running well as a team with Matt G and Matt H willing runners whilst Leighton was pulling the strings behind them and Eccles next score wasn’t far away when more penalties were conceded by Vale of Lune as they were struggling to cope with the speed of the Eccles attack. Jack produced an almost carbon copy of his first try by taking a quick tap and touching down to the right of the posts and giving himself the opportunity to tie the scores but the conversion attempt swerved wide giving the away side a massive let off, which was audible in their reaction as the score was now 19-21.

Vale of Lune were breathing hard now due to the amount of defensive work they had to do and the kick off went to Josh who returned the ball with pure aggression which then allowed Jack and Matt to take the ball into the Vale of Lune half, Abraham followed this approach and when the visitors were penalised for offside, about 20 metres out, it gave Jack a second opportunity and he made no mistake this time by slotting over to give Eccles the lead for the first time at 22-21.

Vale of Lune attempted to take a quick restart but Lucas make no mistake in pouching the kick and set the ball back. Although Vale of Lune turned the ball over to give themselves one last chance which was wasted when they were again guilty of coming in at the side, leaving Eccles to kick the ball out and complete an outstanding comeback.

Although Eccles weren’t at their best at times they didn’t let their heads drop, fought for one another and showed some true grit to turn things round and go into next week's Lancashire Cup game full of confidence.

Report - Andy Curran.

Our thanks to Vale of Lune who made the 100-mile round trip to Eccles when they were unable to host us at Powder House Lane. This was a cracking game of rugby, a competitive full-committment contest, played in a great spirit with excellent discipline by both teams. The Eccles 16s can be proud of thier self-belief and determination to fight back against a strong opponant. It was a dominant second half performance necessitated by a poor opening quarter. We'll be fixing that this week. - CG

Ormskirk v Eccles

SUNDAY 12 DECEMBER

U13s

Eccles v Ashton

Last week's match saw us in a close match against visitors Ormskirk, who kindly stepped in at the last minute and gave us an opportunity for a development game to try out some of the variations in the laws. Beating us 7-4, their coaches identified George as their TREDS player of the match for his relentless energy and drive and for taking a number of tough tackles in his stride - never ceasing to be smiling - well done George.

We've seen a few disciplinary issues creeping into our game of late, including at the end of the Ormskirk match. Whether its reacting to being goaded or being reluctant to shake the opposition's hand after the game - this is something the coaches are working on and we ask all parents to support us in this. We're keen to encourage passion and a desire to win, but it must also be done with grace and dignity, whether we win or lose.

Sunday's match saw Ashton return to us for a second time - the last being a cup match which saw us lose 19-4 to a side which were fast, aggressive and full of energy, despite being on average, smaller in size than Eccles. A good example of technique overcoming strength.

That said, we're a different team from a few months ago so we fancied our chances.

The game got off to our usual start - slow, asleep and caught off-guard, despite knowing how Ashton would play. This is something else we're working on and again, we ask parents to help us by ensuring the lads are focused and prepared, well in advance of kick off.

After conceding a few tries, a few pep talks directed the players to speed up their rucking over, to stop standing/watching and to support each other more. This seemed to work and much of the remaining play was in the middle of the pitch, with both teams seemingly in deadlock and unable to break through each other's defence. Ashton had an amazing ability to get 3-4 players quickly into position to defend against any runs we attempted and we simply didn't spread the ball quick enough once we'd drawn them in.

We continued to battle on though and our hard work paid off with a series of tries from Harrison and Keane, ram-raiding their way through the Ashton defence. This brought the game back to 4-3 to Ashton.

The second half began to see fatigue and fitness come into play and high tackles, from both sides, began to increase in frequency, keeping our resident Referee, Kris, very busy. The fatigue also saw play begin to switch with a few cross-field kicks being attempted which looked like they could pay off for us, but we were again thwarted by the dogged Ashton defence.

Further tries by Keane and Harrison saw us edge closer to 5-4 with only a few minutes left to play. With Kris notifying the game would end at the next dead ball, a last effort by Eccles same a run down the wing by Josh countered by more effective defending, a turn over of the ball and a deft chip into the corner by Ashton, to which we had no defence to respond, allowing them to secure one more try and the victory at 6-4.

Overall, a valiant effort by Eccles and one which surprised the Ashton Coach, Chris, who acknowledged how much we'd improved since we last played.

Highlights of the game included George's stirling work as captain and hooker, 'ferret-like' in his rummaging and working for the ball. Some great work in the middle of the pitch by Oli, Archie, Charlie, Cian and Ethan who all displayed periods of intensity - they need to continue working on this and keep it going throughout the game.

More bruising performances from Owen, Keane, Eddie and Harrison - Eddie genuinely looks like he's given it 110%, by half time and another 110% by the final whistle - he truly is inspirational with is work rate and ethic. If they can all focus on keeping their tackles lower and playing in support of each other - we're onto a winner!

The style of play against Ashton demanded more defending, than attacking along the wings this week from Andrej and Josh than they would have liked, but Josh in particular, stepped up and made some decisive tackles, including an excellent cover tackle to deny Ashton a further try.

New-comers Yas and Luke continue to grow in confidence and their contribution is increasing each game - keep it going!

Final appraisal goes to Freddie - after a few weeks away with illness, he's been finding his form again and after a shaky start - losing his temper towards an opposition player and needing some time to cool off, he took stock of the situation, had a chat with a teammate (Harrison) and the coaches and returned to the pitch.

His performance that followed was commendable. Letting his 'tackling do the talking', Freddie channelled his energy into a brilliant display of determination and commitment, even after he took a knock to his wrist. Our TREDS player of the match.

We'll continue to remind the lads about the need for discipline and respect and we thank the parents for their support off the pitch in promoting the TREDS (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship) values.

The team feels like it's ready to move on from its development stage and the Coaches genuinely feel like we have the ability to win, if ALL the lads want to, that is!

Next week's match is AWAY against Bury in a cup match. Our last victory was also in the cup so hopefully we can repeat this.

SUNDAY 12 DECEMBER

U12s

Eccles v Ormskirk

The U12s hosted a very close game against Ormskirk on Sunday and although it was a narrow defeat the boys played well as a solid unit. A great team performance.

Defensively Owen and Monty held the rucks brilliantly and worked great together with excellent communication between the two of them. Great solid tackles from Jamie B, Edward, Owen and Monty. Seb made a brilliant try stopping tackle.

Jamie and Billy worked with the coaches before the game and it was clear they had listened because they were a force to be reckoned with. They both drove through and gained brilliant yards taking some big hits along the way.

Some amazing trys scored today coming from George and Bryn. First try for Jamie B. The biggest cheer of the day went to Harrison for his brilliant first try and the first of the game. He's been working hard and it was fully deserved gaining him players player.

Game highlights: Harrison's amazing first try. Edward's huge kick the pitch length which allowed Bryn to run onto. George's precise interception of the ball with an amazing try finish.

All round great team performance and the U12s will definitely finish on a high for the Christmas break.
