2XV

Eccles 15-23 Didsbury Toc H

The game kicked off on a fine Autumn afternoon with the pitch bathed in low sun. The opening exchanges had the teams evenly matched. Play was halted at 9 minutes for an injury to a Didsbury player who, after treatment, was carried from the field. Once restarted, the visitors had several phases of sustained attack inside the Eccles 22 but were unable to break through the defensive line. A knock on gave possession back to Eccles and a high tackle by Toc H player led to a kick for a Eccles line out near the halfway line, a second high tackle by DTH put Eccles on the attack inside the visitor's 22 and a third high tackle by Didsbury gave Eccles the opportunity for a penalty kick to corner. From the resulting line out, a well executed driving maul took the Eccles pack over the goal line for the opening score directly in front of the scoreboard; conversion missed. 16 mins TRY Eccles. 5-0.
Eccles confidence was high and straight from the restart the hosts applied sustained attacking pressure inside the visitor’s 22. On 20 mins quick passing from Eccles provided an opportunity for winger Tim Balogun to exploit his pace and drive for the right corner. Committed defensive tackling stoped him 2m short of the goal line, and lacking close support, the ball was turned over and DTH kicked to clear and move play back up field.

With 31 min played a yellow card was issued to Eccles 12, Harry Candland, for lifting an opponent in a tackle, in the middle of the pitch. However, DTH soon lost possession and play returned to their half with Eccles attacking and searching for a second score. The breakthrough eventually came at 39 mins when Neil Williams burst through at the halfway line and made great yards and momentum before offloading to supporting lock Zak Brooker, who steamed through and out paced the defence to ground the ball in the right corner. TRY Eccles. The conversion hit the post but Eccles were enjoying good possession, creating plenty of attacking opportunity and went into the break, comfortably ahead, two tries up. HT 10-0.

The second half kicked off with Eccles playing into the sun and with little sign of the trouble that lay ahead. At 54 mins a DTH try took the score to 10-5. Rather than spur on a response from Eccles it appeared to take all wind from their sails and the next 10 mins saw an unexpected, rapid collapse in composure. The visitors scored again at 60 mins out on the left wing and a well-kicked conversation from a wide position put them ahead for the first time in the game; 10-12. At 63 minutes DTH scored a third try in almost the same position and following the restart the visitors claim two successive penalties to take the score to 10-23. Eccles were struggling to find a response and to add to the misery, Wesley Chiriseri was sent to the bin for obstruction. This appeared to trigger a new found determination to make a stand.

At 68 mins, from a scrum on their 5m, Eccles passed their way out of defence up to the halfway line until a DTH high tackle stopped progress and for which the Didsbury player was shown a yellow. Eccles continued to attack but lost possession and a deep clearing kick took play back in to Eccles territory. At 78 mins, Wes returned to the pitch, suffered another high tackle on the halfway line and from the penalty Eccles pressed for late points, which they gained at 79 mins with a Try from Wesley Chiriseri, under the sticks. FT 15-23.

The 2XV enjoyed a confident first half only to suffer a 12-minute collapse following the break, loosing their command of the game. By the time they were able to find composure and a response, it was too late to influence the result.  Mr Joe Brown gave a good refereering performance throughout - his clear decisions and zero tolerance of high tackles (nothing malicious) kept the game fair and safe.

SUNDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2021

U16s

Lancashire Challenge Cup

Eccles 14-7 Heaton Mersey

Eccles welcomed Heaton Moor looking to back up last week’s impressive victory against Sale in what looked on paper to be an evenly matched contest.

Sam D started proceedings with a searching kick allowing Jack L to unleash a punishing tackle to set the tone for the rest of the match where defences were on top and it was Eccles who attacked first after Heaton Moor had knocked and following some some excellent defensive work by Max putting his body on the line, resulting in assessment by Dr Dave on the side-lines.

From the scrum, Eccles moved the ball wide, across the line and an opening was created after Lucas found half a yard of space and fed Matt G who made further inroads and offloaded to Blake but the attack petered out when the ball spilled loose, giving Heaton Moor the chance to counter attack, finding space on the flank but the Eccles cover defence swept up the threat immediately and forced the knock on. Eccles retained possession but only for a short period as the visitor's defence held firm and turned the ball over.  Heaton Moor were enjoying the best of the territory now and Eccles found themselves unable to break out and restrained into their own half. Following a scrum, an attempted clearing kick by Leighton was well charged down and only some quick thinking by Lucas stopped a certain try when he raced to dive on the loose ball and won the scrum penalty on the 5m line.

Eccles had the put in but the ball went straight out the other side and Jack C had to pick and go down the blind side only to be met with a wall of bodies which forced him into touch. With 10 minutes played, the visitors set their line out for a driving maul and opened the scoring when they crashed over and added the conversion to make it 0- 7.

Eccles regained the ball from the restart when more pressure from Jack L forced the knock on and Eccles set themselves a good attacking platform, only for some slack handling to gift the ball back almost immediately. This pattern continued along with penalties exchanged for the next few minutes.  Eccles continued to attack in the backs through Matt G , Leighton and Lucas seeing a lot of the ball which almost resulted in a try when the ball was moved out via Sam to the returning Scott on the wing who cut inside finding Matt H in support although the ball was lost again in the next phase, stripped at the breakdown, letting Heaton Moor off the hook.

Eccles were putting sustained pressure on the visitor's line with Sam D joining the attack at every opportunity and good backs’ passing found Scott again but some scrambling Heaton Moor defence forced him into touch 10 meters out. Heaton Moor lost the ball from their line out and had to drop out from their own line which Lucas pouched expertly and a penalty to Eccles gave the opportunity to start another attack but more poor ball retention from the line out meant the home side remained scoreless.

Eccles forwards were dominating the visitor's pack with Cael marshalling the troops well and ensuring that he retained the ball in contact to set up another attack with the visitors penalised for a high tackle whilst Jack C was a constant threat with his punishing runs. Eccles best chance to score just before half time came when Jack C won a penalty and Joe went to take a quick tap and Matt H charged through with the visitors on the ropes, but the play was paused for a Heaton Moor player to receive treatment for a head injury and with momentum lost, Eccles went into the half time break behind 0-7.

Heaton Moor kicked off the second half, Cael took the ball cleanly and replacements Abraham and Josh were quickly involved in the action taking the ball forward, but another another dropped pass from the ruck by Eccles gave Heaton Moor possession on the Eccles 20 metre line. When the ball was moved out from the scrum Evan read the game perfectly to nullify the threat even when the visitors had the overlap and with the assistance of James the attack was eventually forced into touch.

From the Eccles line out Leighton’s clearing kick forced Heaton Moor to chase and when Fin put pressure on the receiver, Lucas attempted to kick through the loose ball up field and only a heavy touch prevented a potential try. Eccles were in the ascendency now and soon had Moor pinned to their goal line. With 5 minutes of the half played, James thought he had scored only to be held up forcing Heaton Moor into another goal line drop out to Jack C who returned the ball with interest and won the penalty. The resulting line out however came to nothing as a poor pass fell short of the Eccles attacking line once again giving Heaton Moor the ball back.

Moor made a brief visit into Eccles territory, but Matt H stripped the ball in contact, Cael again set the ball back perfectly from his drive and a lovely offload by Abraham to Jack L who set free James for another strong run creating some space on the left wing for Finn who took the opportunity to challenge his opposite number and skipped round him with good support from Matt G, Josh and Chayse making good yards down the middle and when another high tackle was penalised Eccles looked likely to score but more loose handling turned the ball over to Heaton Moor.

The visitors attempted attacks up their flanks but these efforts were dealt with by Lucas’s dependable tackling, who threatened himself to break the line again whilst Jack L, Leighton and Matt G were beginning to get the upper hand in the centre with more last ditch tackling by Heaton Moor keeping them in front.

Eccles finally got on the scoreboard, with 4 minutes remaining, when Eccles won a scrum 20m inside the Heaton Moor half. Leighton spotted the full back was out of position and under threat of a tackle put a pinpoint kick through and Lucas outpaced the entire Heaton Moor backline and managed to dive full length to ground the ball inches from the back line of the pitch meaning the pressure was on Jack L to level the scores with what was by no means an easy kick from the right of the posts.  Jack kept his composure to slot the extra 2 points over to level the scores at 7-7 with just under 3 minutes left.

James took the restart and Abraham made good yards to offload to Jack L but Eccles let Heaton Moor back in the game by dropping the ball. To their credit, both teams were looking for the victory and, ignoring the opportunity to kick for touch, continued to battle on for the win.

In what was the last play of the game, Eccles won the ball from their scrum and Leighton again opted to kick high and deep to the fullback. Heaton Moor returned the ball up to the halfway line but the pass back from the ruck saw the ball bounce loose through the legs of a player and Matt H pounced to kick the ball through the defence, towards the try line and was winning the foot race when the cover defence impeded him, when he was sure to score, giving the referee no option but to reward the penalty try and make the final score 14-7 to Eccles.

Both sides should be commended on what was a thrilling spectacle for everyone in attendance. Eccles showed great spirit and grit to grind out a win when lesser sides would have folded, this victory should give every player the confidence to realise they can go as far as they want in this competition.

Coach Notes: Full credit to the U16 players of Heaton Moor and Eccles for what was a full hearted, toe to toe, terrific cup tie played in an admirable spirit. Following the visitor’s opening try, Eccles succeeded in keeping play inside the Moor half for 20 minutes, but despite their sustained attacking attempts were unable to break through their very determined defence. The Heaton Moor number 4 (red hair), who had a great game, typified their resilience, work rate and intensity. Ferocious, committed tackling and good discipline from both teams kept the outcome in the balance until the very final seconds. With the realisation that time was running out for them, and the opposition defence proving impenetrable, Eccles were spurred into taking risks - courage and belief which paid off for them. Heaton Moor made Eccles work very hard and dig deep for this win in a very close contest and I applaud their players and coaches not only for their effort, but the sportsmanship and respect they showed at the conclusion.  CG.

Well what an amazing game of rugby from the u12s. A very physical and close game in the end. A few of the boys got some knocks but the team kept going. Exceptional trys from Finn, George and Edward. Defensively the boys dug in. Owen was fantastic in the ruck and off loading. He also managed a few rips that they had practiced in training.  Some good hard tackles from Kenzie, Jamie, Harrison and Billy. Billy took a big hit near the end of the game and unfortunately had to come off.  Like Danny said at the end of the game, a good team performance. Getting better every week!

U11s

Eccles v Burnley

Less than 18 months ago this squad consisted of 6 registered players, however, Coach Pietro aka the Pep Guardiola of the under 11s Rugby, together with his Coaching lieutenants provide an infectious enthusiasm that has helped the team grow rapidly and build in confidence over the last few months . The Eccles under 11’s now have a squad of 16 and are quickly establishing themselves as a fast, powerful and well balanced side who are proving difficult to beat.

Burnley were this week’s visitors having only met Eccles once previously in what proved to be a very close game last season. With 13 players available, it was evident prior to kick off that Eccles were pumped, focused and ready to give their all for the team.

Burnley lined up with some big players, but this didn’t deter Eccles who started the game with their usual speed and work rate, quickly taking a comfortable lead with tries from Seb, Mac and Max.  In an effort to hit back, Burnley pushed forward, however, this proved extremely difficult with Eccles hunting them down in packs. Vincenzo, George and Jesse proved a force to be reckoned with, applying what they had learned in training and executing this perfectly, penning the visitors back.

Driving forward, Eccles showed no fear with Theo displaying great ability to draw in defenders before offloading and firing possession wide several times during the game to set up his team mates. As the score increased with more tries from Kai and Caleb towards the second and third quarter, Burnley didn’t give up and showed good resilience shifting the ball inside and breaking through the Eccles defence in a rare moment to take a try for the away side. Eccles however proved too physical in the main with Finn and Mousa just two of many from the team making try saving tackles, again proving the boys are not fazed when coming up against bigger, physical teams.

Emphasis on the ruck has been paramount in training and this really showed throughout the whole game with Eccles rarely losing possession, much to Burnley’s frustration. With an increased squad, Eccles had the luxury of being able to rotate players utilising both experienced/non experienced players which enabled the pace and continuity of the play to last the full game and whilst Burnley heads never dropped, Eccles finished the final quarter as well as they started the first, with more tries spread out across the team.

Special mention to Musa who in playing only his 2nd ever Rugby game prevented a Burnley try with a tackle that any pro player would have been proud of (video footage available thanks to George’s mum Shelley who does a fantastic job in capturing the team with countless pictures and videos of each match) and to Tyler and Will for making their debuts and putting in solid performances.

The game finished 17-4 and Eccles Under 11s continue their unbeaten run this season.

U10s

Eccles v Burnley

Burnley u10s travelled to Gorton Street today to take on the ever growing band of Eccles U10s.  As it was Remembrance Sunday all the players and parents observed an impeccable  two minute silence remembering those who gave their tomorrows for our todays.  Burnley travelled with good numbers they had 13 and Eccles had 12 players due to 3 being off poorly.  Coach Dan was on birthday duty so Coach John, Coach Tommo and first time to the u10s Coach Brendan sorted the players into training squads and into two teams to play 6 V 6 games.
Both Eccles teams took up where they had left off last week in the game against Sale - on the attack straight away and playing some good attacking rugby.
They had worked on the defensive line in the training session before the game and this showed in the games with all the players communicating better and asking for the ball.
Lots of shouting which is exactly what we need to see
Consistently good tackling and driving the opposition back – we have some pretty big players who are dominant in tackling and even the smallest player on the pitch is a ferocious terrier constantly chasing the ball and getting the better of the other team. Our players tackle in packs - our player tackles the opposition and his team mate is on his shoulder to help him out straight away. The support play is excellent and getting better each week.
Scoring tries is great but rugby is a team game and everybody contributed to the win and draw for our teams.  Just because you haven’t scored a try doesn’t mean that you aren’t a valued and integral part of the team - it just means that you may have passed the ball to one of your teammates who had the space to run on and put the ball down over the try line.  Without your initial pass they may not have been a try!
Many thanks as always to the parents for their support and to our coaches John, Tommo and Brendan for helping out this week. It is very much appreciated.
Good luck to all parents with washing the kit - every player came off absolutely filthy and any tips as to how to get the white shorts white again will be gratefully received!
Thankfully children are waterproof and don’t shrink so can jump in the bath or shower to get the mud off them!
This Friday, the 19th of November we have our first of our “ Friday Nights Under the Lights” training session 6 pm till 7 pm on the Astroturf. Everyone is welcome
Next week the u10s travel to Rochdale for what will be a good test of their rugby skill and ability. Top tip please make sure you bring a towel or clean clothes for the drive home from Rochdale as that tends to be quite muddy up there.
Full details about the training and the game on Sunday it will be posted in the U10s parents WhatsApp group.
