The Lancashire County Rugby Challenge Cup was introduced in the 1893-94 season but following the subsequent departure of clubs to Northern Union after the 1895 schism, the competition was eventually withdrawn until it was reintroduced in 1971 and in 1997 renamed the John Burgess Lancashire Cup in tribute to the celebrated Salfordian, who played for Old Salfordians, Broughton Park and Lancashire before coming to prominence as the coach of Lancashire and England, and later the President of the RFU. The most successful teams in the competition are Orrell (10), Waterloo (7) Liverpool St Helens (5) Sedgley Park (4) and Fylde (4). The current holders of the Cup are Vale of Lune. Eccles have never lifted the magnificent silverware.
